Pinyon, Colorado Mesa University’s national literary magazine, was founded in 1994 and has published continuously since spring 1996. Initially, the magazine was called Pinyon Poetry and published twice a year—as a sort of literary experiment—using private donations. Since the name change, the journal has featured poetry, prose and art, along with the occasional review, and has become an annual publication funded primarily by the Department of Languages, Literature and Mass Communications at C.M.U. The magazine is edited by both faculty and students, with undergraduates filling vital roles usually reserved for graduate students or even faculty at other institutions. The experiment has succeeded, and the experience has been invaluable.
